20 Myths About product marketing salary: Busted

I recently read the article, “The Top 10 Reasons to Join Marketing” on Market.com, written by Mike Zysman, VP of International Marketing. He has some great points. I’m going to share a few of my favorites.

People are not making money because they don’t have a lot of time to spend marketing. In the same way, many people don’t need to spend much time on marketing and don’t feel they need to spend much time on creating it.

I’ve never heard anyone say, “Well, I don’t know if I can do that, I’m not that great at it.” I think this is a great point. You can’t compare yourself to a marketing professional who has a lot of experience. There is no one marketing professional who has the experience you need to be the best at marketing.

I think this is an obvious point, but marketing is a skill for which you do not need to be great. You CAN be great, and in fact have the skills, but if your marketing is not your best skill then you will not be very good at it.

It can be tough to get the best bang for your buck since you need to work on things like your marketing skills. But if you are truly talented, you CAN work on yourself- but, you must remember that working on yourself will never be your best skill.

Marketing is a very personal skill. It’s more than just being organized and having great ideas. It’s getting the right people on the same page, creating a clear and concise pitch, and then being able to listen and respond to feedback. You can practice this all the time with your boss or your friends. It’s the stuff that you can’t do on your own.

The fact is that you can work on marketing yourself, but you need to consider that you might not be a particularly good candidate for the job. Why? Because a lot of the marketing knowledge required to be a successful marketing person is transferable from one person to the next. Even if you are great at marketing yourself, you probably won’t be great at selling your skills to others.

That brings us to the next topic, which is the concept of “product marketing salary.” You might be surprised to learn that in many cases we don’t even talk about the salary. What we do talk about is the skills that you need to get hired and the skills that you need to retain when you leave. If you don’t have these skills, you won’t be able to get hired.

Product marketing salaries generally follow a pay scale. Below this is a range of salaries that you may qualify for, and then you have to meet a few more requirements before you can get hired. The general rule of thumb is that a company will pay you what your skills are worth, and a good product marketer is worth 5-10 times that.

Product marketing is the very top of the pay scale for product marketing professionals.
