If you’re selling a car, you have to sell the car to the people who want to buy it. If you’re selling a relationship, you have to sell the relationship to your potential customers. You can’t just build a relationship with your target market and then turn your own sales down. You have to build it first.
It doesn’t have to be the same person buying your product/service, it can be a different person. It can be a different person buying your competition’s product/service, it can be a different person buying your friends’s product/service, etc. I think it is important to note that this is different than a relationship between a business and a customer. In a relationship you are talking to them. In a business you are talking to their boss.
